Samaan - Detroit Memories

If you’re on the lookout for that track that’ll take you away, like many claim but fail to do, 'Detroit Memories' could be the one. Not just as a reminisce to Motor City glory days, but the way dream-weaving synths prioritise the welfare of your precious headspace...and then comes fierce acid techno telling you to snap out of it. Pot-boiling acid demanding that you man up and jump down from the clouds, it’s a bit cruel from Samaan Vahid really, but you can’t argue with the Belfast up and comer’s believing of angels and demons becoming bedfellows. Excellent transitions from smooth into rough, with Mark Broom’s remix a non-believer in niceties once his throb and thrust has taken over – all of his recollections of The D, sounding more like suppressions trying to take away the pain, are taking the jugular for ransom and never letting up.

About Samaan’s softer side...here it is setting up shop on 'Pixel Planet', not an 8-bit block-buster of moves but post-epiphany acid ambience with old skool hi hats rat-a-tatting and chords hitting the snooze button. A little meaner on the inside but otherwise just as composed in its rubbing of temples is 'Ya Feel Me'. Asking you to jack responsibly upon consumption, it’s the door-hammering bassline that suggests there’s a bad egg at the track’s root, Samaan getting anxious like a firebug on Guy Fawkes Night. An all-round A+ acid exhibition, and you’re glad Samaan is telling both sides of the story, going greedy for heady heights and rumbling rock bottoms in his recollections.



Luke Solomon - Ultrasound

A headache when it comes to classification, 'Ultrasound' is central to four tracks of pleasing pickles. A gentle giant puts farty breakbeat bass plus head-hunting vocal and spooked choristers on one side of a dancefloor scrimmage line, against Pong-playing blips, aquatic percussion and gentle piano nudges on the other. Both sides are likely to swap positions at any time. Much lighter and less chaotic than some of its inventory tells you, an assortment of technological spins, acid rolls, bongo beats, Balearic contact and more are the tip of the mishmash, the Music for Freaks fundamentalist throwing in synth selections whenever they’re on offer in a half-improvised, conversation-interrupting spread around as well. Solomon has his house in order, with a lot of love to give.

A similar cupboard full of contradictions is opened for the '1.2 Horn Version', a jazz-techno smorgasbord beamed up with trumpets trying to fight gravitational pull; 8-bit pulses are called upon, and Solomon again arranges synths when the time is right. Deepness giving off druggy symptoms, it’s off-the wall, punch-packing in places, playful in others.

Swiss big cheese Kalabrese lounges a little more, an outing from Sacha Winkler that you imagine once upon a time had a career peddling sleazy red light jams, but now has a happier outlook on life, the backing singers breathing more easily thanks to the sensible kitsch taking control. Or by another categoriser’s definition, deep electro house. LoSoul is another happy chappy with a grubby lil’ wormer funking though the night, beginning as a tastily taut garage beat – not as dedicated a hoarder as Solomon, but he likes a spot of bric-a-brac nonetheless. Peter Kremeier applies a stinger of a breakdown made to make you jump from your seat, though any chair occupation throughout will be limited.

The first of many little conversations with friends and artists connected with our little project.

Hans Berg is an artist from Sweden who has been based out of Berlin for the last several years. He approached me with some ideas and tracks early last year and after some hazy nights in Berlin I realised he would become a main artist on the label.

His debut 12" will drop before the summer and will have an album out hopefully by the end of 2012.....




For people who don't know , tell us who Hans Berg is?

I'm a swedish guy who makes music, mostly house, but i also do music for the swedish video artist Nathalie Djurbergs videos and installations. It's really nice to be able to do two quite separate things, because i get to do all kinds of musical styles, and mix them up however i want. There are not boundries in the art music i do, on the other hand it's nice to work within certain boundries as you do with dance music. I do live performances too, which i really like, but i don't DJ because it doesn't really interest me, although every now and then i change my mind for a few seconds when i hear someone really good playing.


What make you get into electronic music , what are your influences?

I've loved electronic music ever since i was like 12, as a kid i listened a lot to the radio and in sweden we had a long running show with electronic music that i kind of grew up on. I like a lot of old school things, i'd say i come from a (acid) house, detroity kind of background, that's my favourite sound. I like things a bit grittier, although for some reason it often turns out quite nice and pleasant when i do music. I think i'm too soft.





And at what age did you think you wanted this as a Career?

Actually quite late, i released a few tracks back around 2001, and then i foolishly thought i wanted to be a graphic designer instead, so i started studying that in Berlin. But there i met Nathalie Djurberg, we started collaborate and i was making more and more music, and taking it more seriously, and soon i didn't have time for school so i dropped out and started focusing full time on my music, which i've been doing for a couple of years now.


tell us about your involvement with your partner Nathalie Djurberg's art installations.

We always work together, she does video art and installations with sculptures, and i do the music. The films are stop motion animations, with clay puppets and such, and there is usually no other sound apart from the music, so it both work as narrative film music and you could say that it sometimes replacy dialogue, bringing the story forward. Or i choose to go against the story with the music to create a certain effect.



when we were in Berlin you showed me the 5 track project could your explain this and how has it developed.

Yes this was for a large installation, with over 80 sculpures, resembling gigant birds, and five films. Each film had its own one-channel soundtrack, but they were all playing in sync, and the five soundtracks together formed a "master" soundtrack, making it into a 5 channel surround score. This was very complex to make, since each film had it's own narration and special score, but at the same time they had to work together as a whole, and it also had to work with the sculptures. In the installation, when you walked up to see one film, you would hear that soundtrack louder than the others. And when you would stand in the middle of the room, amongst the sculptures, you would get the best surround effect. The music is electronica with strings and horns and synths and sound fx and some more things. We will exhibit this again in the beginning of may at the New Museum in New York, and in autumn in San Fransisco at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts.

How do you go about producing tracks?

It usually starts with fiddling around with different sounds, when i find a sound i like i play around with it, making some kind of melody, or if it's a drum sound/kit i start working on a beat, and then i go from there, building the track. With the art music it's a bit different, then i start with an idea that would fit the film, and start looking for the sounds and melodies for my idea.

you recently moved from Berlin back home, how long where you there , and how do you find living i such a vibrate city?

I was nine years in Berlin, so it really has influenced me in many ways, i've noticed that i really favour a certain Berlin sound if you can call it that, the dirty house music bouncing off concrete walls. I realize i've gotten very spoiled with clubs, going to all the best ones every week, almost everything is allowed and they never close, that's definitely something i miss. But electronic music is also such a hard business there, EVERYONE is a DJ or producer, and everyone fights for the few spots there are, that can get a bit annoying. But anyhow i need a change of scenery, and after a few months here in Sweden I'm planning to move to New York, wish me luck!

I first really met these lads Hamish Cole,Jonny Sleight & Hugh Bailey at there wicked night the other month in Leeds, when they had Cottam at their Buttersideup shindig, Their warm-up for Cottam was the best set Ive heard in quite a while. plus they boys are from Norfolk and fly the Norwich Flag!

Anyway they have posted a mix up on the web which certainaly desevre's some attention, even perhaps a gathering. Get a nice chilled beverage and enjoy!!

Bournmouth based Sam Russo released his debut ep with us back last year, since he has doing very well for himself, including a lovely little gig at Fabric on the 23rd July alongside Craig Richards, 2020 soundsystem, No Regualr Play, Maetrik, Terry Francis, Lee Burridge and more

Turkey isn’t often associated with underground music, I can only think of a couple of established artists on the scene right now indulging us with there productions worldwide.

However one very promising artist is arising from the capital Istanbul, in the shape of Henry Gilles, I first noticed the young man when he brought out his Crunchy fingers EP on Logo Tunisia Records. Since then we have him on board and he has produced 2 cracking remix efforts due out by the end of the year.

Fellow Leeds Resi's Paul & Mark aka Death On The Balcony first appeared on Fullbarr via their excellent Stay Remix way back this year.

.....Comes yet another label debut, this time for Dutch deep house new comer Helt.

Set Beat starts off with a simple yet effective groove. Some nice spread out synth stabs give a deep and deadly aura. Helt holds back and releases the clap really late on, getting the dance floor all pent up. Some liquid metal effects and a dark, eerie male vocal aptly season the track out with some subtle late-night flavour's

Mark Brooms interpretation takes things straight to the centre of the dance floor by creating a tight loopy beat to build on, steadily layering with warm organic rhythms and lazy hazy drones. A peaktime tool with plenty of backbone. Hypnotic.

Leeds A-list Techno party System residents Annie Errez and Bobby O'Donnell take the original record down a much darker path with a stripped back, trippy, late night groove. Electro-tinged blips float over gunky, lo-fi screw beats while warbling, palid vocals hover in the background. Wouldn't sound out of place in one of Magda's sets.

After Russo’s Wicked Debut EP Manitoba He takes us down a gear with his interpretation, adding depth with a crunchy low groove, swirling synths and moody melodies.

Archie Hamilton crafts a clinical deep house spin of the original,with some delicious acid undertones. Creating some ripples in London at the minute, he is definately one to watch for the future.

Support has come in from the cream of leading DJs on the international circuit including, Love birds,Afrilounge, HOSH, Terry Francis, Tricksi,Motorcitysoul , Droog,Alex Niggemann, Siicone Soul,James Teej , Milton Jackson,Vangelis and many many many more..


‘Manitoba EP’ is the debut release from Sam Russo, a 23 year old emerging techno talent from Southend-on-Sea. Russo has been developing his own take on house and techno and his Dj abilities have been rewarded with a residency for Mr C, at his Superfreq night in Southampton as well as regular gigs at London venues such as SeOne, Pacha and the Aquarium, now it’s time for him to step up as a producer and show what he has to offer.

The EP kicks off with the original of ‘Fuck my MPC’, a deep and pulsating house cut built around tight beats, deep keys and some rather risqué spoken word vocals. First of the ‘Fuck my MPC’ remixes comes from Cecille and Tsuba artist Huxley who shows why he is such hot property at the moment with an incredible slow mo house reworking that is deep soulful house personified. Next up we have the uber talented engineer/producer/artist Saytek who takes a tough and hypnotic approach with his wonderful techy bass driven remix.

The second original track comes in the form of ‘Manitoba’, a warm, pad drenched slab of deep house that oozes class from every bar and shows incredible musical maturity for this young producers debut release. The two remixes of ‘Manitoba’ are supplied by Canadian electronic music hero Nitin who delivers a stripped yet wonderfully organic sounding slice of house and UK based dub techno producer Youandewan who turns in a truly sublime slice of deep and mesmeric tech house.
